Lightpad Block M + Live Block, Windows 10

Jan Ondra

Hello,

Im owner of Lightpad block M and it works well with cable and windows 10. ROLI Dashboard finds it with no problems at all.

Recently I bought Live block and connected it to my Lightpad block M and Dashboard cant recognize the block even the LEDs are lighted up. Is there some solution? I know windows 10 cant use bluetooth but I thought that the information is transmitted through the DNA connectors.

Why I didnt have any concerns while buying the live block was because my friend has also Lightpad block M and when we connected them together, Dashboard via windows 10 recognized both lightpad blocks, the second one connected only with the DNA connectors.

Any idea?

Thank you

Live Block Not Being Seen by Roli Dashboard or other Softwares:

Just wanted to add some comments about this thread. I had gone through the whole thing from start to finish and tried everything to no avail. But I did not give up. I tried getting the Roli Dashboard to recognize my Live Block HSVC and also tried Noize app on iPhone SEVERAL TIMES.

I don't know what changed but finally the Noize app (even though previously connected to the Live Block many times) gave me the option to update the firmware. The Live Block goes dark before you even know that the option to update is there. After you choose to update it will give you the option to connect another Block--choose this and reconnect to your Live Block. It will likely take you through the update steps multiple times (I had to do it 3 times). Finally it will tell you that you are up to date.

It will now work with the Noize app and after using the DNA connection to your Lightpad Block or Seaboard Block the Roli Dashboard will see it.

Honestly this is quite a process---hours long---in order to find a solution to the Control Blocks not working as they should because the firmware is too old. I think that Roli should put this in a manual or something that ships with the devices (or at least the mention of the URL that takes you there) so that someone doesn't have to go through so much time to find a solution (I happened along this post but others may not be so lucky to find this) all the while thinking they were shipped a defective device.

Note: any mention above about Midi CC mode beiing on or off will not make any sense to you if Roli Dashboard does not see your Control Block. You need to resurrect your device from the dead using and iPhone or iPad.

Hello

I have another problem with the M lightpad. At all times such a message is activated and the dashboard changes the app itself (the view in the dashboard is different than the mode on the device) Even when I run only the web browser in the background dashboard informs me about the control and makes a mess in the work modes. Both the device and the dashboard have the latest update

For futurelings that come here looking for a workaround and if you have a Galaxy S8/S8+, the following was successful for me:

* Find and install the 3.0.5 version of the Noise app APK (just google 'Noise apk 3.0.5', you'll find it)

* Disconnect everything from USB cables (and bluetooth too, although I presume you probably don't have anything capable of connecting to them via bluetooth at the moment anyhow)

* Connect the little block to the lightpad or seaboard via the DNA snap connectors

* Turn on the lightpad or seaboard - this'll turn on the lil' block too

* Go to your android settings > Applications > Noise app info > Permissions > Make sure all permissions are enabled. I think not having them enabled was causing my entire phone to restart when I'd try to connect a block.

* Update the firmware

Hi Marcin,

Thanks for your note, and I can understand your frustration. We're working on firmware updates over DNA for a future release – this will allow you to update Control Blocks on Windows directly. Thanks for your patience in the meantime.

Hello . I am slowly losing my patience. Finally I updated Live Block to 0.4.2 via Iphone. Now when new updates appears - namely.. 0.4.3 for Lightpad - there is the same problem. Live block is visible but now is disabled and I can't update it again ( by.syx file also) . I see only the window with information that I must connect my block directly to usb not via dna. Will it be the same every time? It's frustrating and i must run for friend's iphone again

Hi Marcin, it does sound like you'll need to update your Live Block to current firmware using an iOS or MacOS device prior to using it with your Windows computer. Please feel free to get in touch with our support team if you have any more questions.

Hello . I can't update Roli Live Block because Dashboard doesn't even see it. When I conect it to lightpad I see red bar of lights (not green) and only half of buttons lights up. It is possible to get older versions of firmware to lightpad? Maybe this can help

@Ben, the behavior of the LEDs should correspond with the scale selected; see this article for full details.

@Tom, thanks for weighing in. @Marcin, in case you need the firmware files, please see this guide.

Mi Marcin,

You can download the block firmware to your Windows PC, than drag the file onto your block on the Dashboard app. You'll need to check with support where the proper firmware files are - I can't seem to find them in looking around the site....

Hi there,

it would be great if the led behaved like in the noise app to show scales and chords.

Cheers,

Ben

Hello . I have the same problem but I don't have a friend with iOS Device. :/

Currently Control Blocks can either be set to Midi CC mode on or off, although I can see how it'd be useful to select the behavior on a per-button basis. We do have an update planned for the near future which should successfully allow the buttons to hold, toggle, gate, etc. Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

UPDATE: It seems like you need to update firmware for the live block twice! One to 0.2.5 and second to 0.4.2. The octave, chord and scale buttons are now working. But the arp button is not working and the sustain is on toggle. Is there some way to change only some of the buttons to behave like Midi CC and assign them to other DAW stuff and the sustain to hold?

Jan Ondra

My Lightpad block M is firmware 0.4.2, my Live block is 0.2.5, which should be the newest versions. Roli dashboard is the newest version.

MIDI note CC is off, note grid is on. Also tried restarting to default setting both devices. Still doesnt work. Only thing that works is the sustain button :(

Im on windows 10, blocks connected through USB cable. I can see the LEDs changing while changing octaves and stuff on the live block but nothing happens. The octaves in the LIghtpad block M in the dashboard doesnt change and when I play instrument in bitwig, it plays still the same octave.

Is it possible that my specific piece of Live block is corrupted? (Tried NOISE app on iOS device, works well)

When attached to the Lightpad Block, the Live Block should change octaves, scales, and chords of the attached Lightpad. You may want to make sure that in ROLI Dashboard the 'Midi CC' mode is not selected for your Live Block and that your Lightpad Block has the Note Grid app loaded. Let me know if this helps or if you have more questions.

ROLI Dashboard allows easy integration between BLOCKS and Ableton Live. With ROLI Dashboard you can customize the Lightpad Block's touch-responsive surface to control Ableton Live in a wide variety of ways. This article will show you how to use the Lightpad Block as a drum pad controller in Ableton. You can also control Ableton Live clips and instruments with the Lightpad Block, and use Lightpad and Seaboard Blocks as melodic instruments in Ableton Live.

Go to Preferences → Link MIDI → MIDI Ports

Ensure that Track and Remote are turned On next to Input: Lightpad Block

Step 1: ROLI Dashboard Settings

With your Lightpad connected to your computer, launch ROLI Dashboard and select your Lightpad in ROLI Dashboard's visualizer. Select the 'Drum Block' app to load it onto your Lightpad.

Click 'Edit', and under 'Mode,' select '4x4 Single Channel.' This will create a 4x4 drum pad using a single channel of MIDI. This will automatically select the following settings:

  • MIDI mode: Single Channel
  • Note channel first: 1
  • Note channel last: 1
  • Base Note: C1 (ideal, as most Drum Racks are mapped from C1)
  • Grid Size: 4

If you'd like each note you play to have the same velocity, select 'Fixed Strike.'

Step 2: Create a MIDI track

  • Open a new Ableton set and load a Drum Rack instrument of your choice onto a MIDI track
  • Record-arm the MIDI track

You should now be able to trigger these drums from your Lightpad Block.

Step 3: Set up the dimensions of touch

The Lightpad Block's dimensions of touch can provide intuitive control over your drum sounds.

Strike will be automatically mapped to the velocity of each drum sound.

Glide, Press & Lift

You can set up different Glide, Press & Lift settings for each individual drum sound within the Drum Rack.

  1. Select the drum sound within that Drum Rack that you wish to control with Glide, Press or Lift.
  2. Right-click on top of the selected Simpler instrument and go to 'Simpler → Sampler'
  3. Assign Pitch Bend (Glide), Aftertouch (Press) and Off Vel (Lift) to the parameters you wish to control. You can also assign Velocity(Strike) to control other parameters.

Slide

Slide transmits MIDI CC 74 by default.

You may change what MIDI CC message Slide transmits under the Global settings of ROLI Dashboard's Drum Block app.

Roli Lightpad Block M Ableton Tutorial

You can assign Slide to the desired parameters on a Drum Rack or an Audio Effect by MIDI Mapping. In this example, Slide is being set to modulate the amount of 'Drive' control of 'Saturator' Audio Effect on the Kick Drum:

  1. Select MIDI Mapping on the top-right corner
  2. Select 'Drive' on 'Saturator'
  3. Perform the Slide gesture on your Lightpad Block to map it to this parameter
